Provision of Food, Drink & Supplements for Adult In-Patients

  • Build-up
  • Complan, powder or tetrabricks

  • Margarine
  • Preserves
  • Sugar
  • Squash
  • Milk shake syrup
  • Condiments
Notes

1. On a routine basis Wards should be able to offer patients:

  • Milky drinks/milkshakes
  • Bread/toast + preserves + butter + margarine
  • Biscuits
  • Cereal + milk
  • Build-up or Complan drinks
2. Guidence for visitors bringing food items to patients in hospital is available.
(Suitable items include - fresh fruit, fruit juices, cordials, squashes, crisps, nuts,
biscuits, sweets, plain cakes and buns)

Order by request from Ward By arrangement with Dietitian
  • Normal Menu (includes Halal and Vegetarian)
  • Small meals & inbetween meal snacks
  • Modified Consistency
  • Renal menu
  • Coeliac a la carte menu (gluten free)
  • Fortified soups and sweets available from main normal menu
  • Paediatric Menu
  • Therapeutic Diets
  • Normal menu provides choices for those on a simple therapeutic diet e.g weight reduction or diabetes.
  • Gluten-free Bread/Gluten-free Biscuits for Gluten-free Diets for Coeliac Disease
  • Vegan meals
  • Snack Box
  • Non-standard Therapeutic Diets. These will include allergy diets and other very specialised therapeutic diets.
  • Additional snacks for individually identified patients e.g. those on High Protein/ High Calorie Diets as prescribed by the dietitian.
Notes

1. If a small meal is ordered snacks will be sent with each meal.Please make sure these are given to the patient bewteen meals.

2. If a Soup meal replacement is required ask for fortified soup and order fortified milk pudding on the normal menu.
3. If a meal is to be missed; contact the kitchen to make alternative arrangements.

4. Non standard therapeutic diets must be referred to the dietitian.
Notes

Refer to the Dietitian if:
1) MUST> 2

2) MUST>1 but oral intake poor and condition deteriorating

3) A non-standard therapeutic diet required

4) Patient is still not eating or drinking well after trying small meals/snacks/milky drinks offered from the Ward for 24- 48 hours.

5) Nutritional requirements cannot be met orally e.g. Enteral Tube Feeding required .

Pharmacy Enteral Tube Feeding (ETF)
By Dietitian / Prescription
Prescribable Supplements
  • Dietitians sign for supplements on Drug Chart
  • Supplement to be dispensed by:
    pharmacy at both SLH & BRI.
  • Supplements kept as ward stocks.
    Reviewed by pharmacy.
  • Supplement to be given out by RGN at times prescribed.
  • If supplement required at weekend, follow standard regimen.
  • Dietitian calculates requirements and records feeding regimen on ETF Chart
  • ETF dispensed by Pharmacy
  • Dietitian reassesses on regular basis
  • If Enteral Feeding requested by Doctor at weekend, follow standard starter regimen.

Prescribable supplements should not be given out unless prescribed by a Dietitian or Doctor; or as per Standard Supplement Protocol at weekends or Bank Holidays.
