Referral Criteria

Overweight or obese children with a BMI>91st and 98th centile respectively

Referral pathway

Referrals from GP's

 

Referrals from Health Visitors, School Nurses and Practice Nurses, providing the letter clearly states that the child's GP has consented to the referral

Additional Information

The Body Mass Index (BMI) should be used to identify and measure childhood obesity/overweight, provided the values are related to reference standards for age and sex

 

BMI = weight in kilogrammes

          height in metres2

 

The child's BMI should be plotted on a BMI centile chart for children.  (BMI charts can be obtained from Harlow Printing Ltd)
