Malnutrition results in delayed healing, increased risk of complications and pressure sores. The aim of this chart is to detect malnutrition and reduce its implications by following a nutrition care plan. Patients should be assessed on first contact with the health professional, and appropriate action taken.

Malnutrition Quotient (MQ)

1. Measure Body Mass Index (wt/ht2)

BMI Score Picture

Mark BMI on top scale and read from bottom scale, eg. if BMI = 20, Score = 49.5. Record actual score as in box A below.
2. Measure Mid-Upper Arm Circumference "MUAC" (cms)
Malnutrition Quotient Picture
 
Mark "MUAC" on top scale and read score from bottom scale e.g. if MUAC = 26 Score =85. Record actual score as in box B below, subtract 40 obtain MQ score.
