Gym

SLH Staff Gym

The gym based at St. Luke's is the smaller of the two gyms, but it is still more than adequate for general training sessions.

This gym has very recently been re-developed, using money raised from membership fees and the help of our Estates Department. It has been re-painted throughout and cupboards, benches, lockers, etc. have all been updated.

The equipment has also been modernised. The treadmill was replaced a few months ago, and just before Christmas 2001, the stepper, recumbent bike and upright bike were all replaced too.

These new pieces of equipment mean that we can monitor members health even more closely as they all have heart rate monitors built into them. They also come without plugs and so there are no wires trailing around, making it even safer for members.

We have also bought an attachment to the multigym. This is a machine which allows use of a pec-deck, lateral raise, triceps extension and lateral pull-down. Therefore, widening members choice and range of workout.

Classes

We have been able to set up a yoga class on a weekly basis at SLH. Although this is run through the gym, and is paid for by the gym, it is not held there. Unfortunately, at SLH there is no space available at the gym to hold classes, therefore, this session is held in the old coffee lounge in Horton Wing. This class is very popular and is open to all staff - not just those who are gym members. Again, to encourage people to take part in the class, the cost is kept very low, at just £1.50 per session.
