Occupational Therapy Rheumatology Services

Occupational Therapy involves assessing and treating people who have difficulties with completing everyday activities such as washing, dressing, cooking, getting about at home and getting on and off furniture, such as chairs. beds and toilets, due to their medical condition.  This service is provided for people with rheumatological conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, psoriatic arthritis and lupus.

 In-patients 

In-patients are treated on ward F4 at St Luke's Hospital where an initial assessment takes place.   Information gained from this assessment determines any further input required e.g. kitchen assessment, eating assessment, provision of equipment, home visit or splinting.

The objectives of treatment are:-

• Maintain and maximise functional abilities
• Joint protection

This comprises of education, advice, the provision of small aids and equipment and the manufature/fitting of thermoplastic and pre-made splints.

 Out patients

You will be assessed by the Occupational Therapist in the Occupational Therapy Deopartment at St Luke's Hospital.  The Occuational Therapist will discuss the difficulties you are having  completing everyday activities such as washing, dressing, cooking, feeding, working, getting about at home and getting on and off furniture such as chairs, beds and toilets.

You will be asked a range of questions about the way your condition affects your ability to complete everyday tasks. 

The Occupational Therapist can help in a range of ways, which include:-

• Providing or recommending the use of specific gadgets or equipment.
• Giving advice on managing your condition, conserving energy and protecting your joints.
• Providing specially designed splints/supports to reduce pain and provide support.
• Advise on modifying/adapting your home environment.

Any major adaptations to your home may be discussed with the hospital Occupational Therapist but they are the responsibility of Social Services and will be provided and carried out by them.

Referrals

Referrals to our service are received from Rheumatology Consultants, General Practitioners (GP) and other health professionals.
