Criteria for the provision of Wheelchairs to individuals in nursing and residential homes

The terms and conditions of the Loan Agreement are explained to the individual, their family, or where appropriate, a named individual within the Home.
Equipment will be loaned only after assessment and in the following instances:
Indoors
- Where the individual is unable to walk but is capable of self propelling and can thereby be independent around the home or garden.
- Where the individual requires a special wheelchair or modification in order to facilitate normal seating posture.
Outdoors
- Chairs are issued subject to availability, where the family request a chair for the purpose of taking their relative out on a regular basis, and the individual or their family can accept responsibility for the wheelchair.
Chairs are not provided by Wheelchair Services where a resident is merely transported from room to room. Provision and maintenance in this instance is the responsibility of the Home, as part of basic equipment.
Chairs requested for day trips/outings etc. are not provided and should be hired from local charities eg DIAL or Red Cross.
Any wheelchair on loan from the Wheelchair Service is being used as a portering/pool chair will be withdrawn immediately, as litigation could result from inappropriate use of the wheelchair by a person it has not been prescribed for.
